ABOARD chronicles ci accompagna in un viaggio visivo alla scoperta dell'affascinante anonimato di chi vive una crociera, una vera e propria società cosmopolita sui mari. Passeggeri e membri dell'equipaggio abitano, per periodi più o meno lunghi ma limitati nel tempo, queste città galleggianti: “Solcando i mari siamo in moto perpetuo. Nel susseguirsi dei ponti, nel labirinto dei corridoi, nei saloni brillanti e nei giochi d'acqua delle piscine, si perde la propria storia e se ne ritrova un’altra“. Queste storie prendono vita in immagini in bianco e nero che raccontano un ambiente sorprendentemente favorevole alla riflessione.
Il ritmo della vita su una nave è affascinante: ogni ciclo è preciso, scandito. Una, due settimane per i passeggeri, circa 6 mesi per gli equipaggi. Ad ogni ciclo ci saranno sempre le stesse persone, che faranno le stesse cose allo stesso modo e negli stessi spazi. In principio può sembrare destabilizzante. Chiunque e nessuno: sulla nave si diventa parte di un enorme meccanismo che gira e si rinnova continuamente; tutti ne fanno parte. Dopo una attenta e lunga osservazione la mia idea iniziale è cambiata. La nave crociera, una piccola superficie quadrata disposta su più livelli in equilibrio sui mari, è il più denso contenitore multietnico che esista. E in questo luogo galleggiante osservo gli estranei come creature meravigliose che giocano con regole perpetue, costruendo i propri spazi privati in un contenitore condiviso, giocando, amando, ridendo, e lavorando come dentro una bolla senza tempo.
La nave scintillante seduce i passeggeri, redendo l'equipaggio pressoché invisibile. Ma tutto funziona, esiste e seduce grazie ai membri dell’equipaggio. Essi ne sono il meccanismo, il cuore pulsante delle città sul mare. Così la nave, da enorme bestia che fagocita le identità delle persone che trasporta, diventa lo scenario perfetto per la messa in scena, il palcoscenico delle storie perpetue.
Ogni anno, in Europa, le navi da crociera trasportano oltre 100.000 passeggeri. Una crociera ospita mediamente ospita 6000 persone, tra passeggeri e membri dell’equipaggio, in una lunghezza di circa 400 metri per un’altezza inferiore a 70. In questo spazio fisico che fluttua magicamente sulle acque, si diventa un solo corpo, tutti e nessuno, senza alcun legame o realtà con la propria identità.
